Some history about the Portuguese wine

Before Portugal representing the country it is today, wine was already part of the country history. Belonging to most Western civilizations, wine represents, in the days we live, one of the oldest drinks and is a source of legends and phrases as "God’s gift" and "blood of Christ."

From the time of the Phoenicians, passing the Romans, through the time of the Portugal Discoveries to the present day, wine has always been present in the history of Portugal. The Romans were the people who most encouraged the cultivation of the vineyard and later, the Discoveries came to trigger the awakening of this product that has been introduced in the four corners of the world.

In the 19th century, wine was already part of the diet and in the 20th century wine and vineyard regulation began. The regions of the Douro (by the famous Port wine and table wines), Madeira, Setúbal (Moscatel), Carcavelos, Dão, Colares and Vinho Verde (unique in the world) were demarcated.

Currently, Portugal represents a strong producer of table wines with more than 285 types of grape varieties that are normally harvested in September, the month in which grape harvesting takes place, a well-known Portuguese tradition.

The Portuguese wines and the demarcated regions are part of the Portuguese heritage and, besides representing the wine industry, have contributed to the birth of wine tourism, a type of tourism that presents a positive growth and brings the wine culture closer to consumers.
