Once Upon a Time...

Part of the emblematic northern region, between Porto and Douro, Solar Egas Moniz welcomes you in a building with 120 years of history.This newly opened manor house has a familiar, intimate ambience and total comfort, where everything has been planned down to the last detail. The nice little messages that you discover inadvertently and its cosy corners are an invitation to peace and lazing around. This charming family-run guest house is inspired by the historic achievements of Egas Moniz, Tutor of D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, who is buried a few short metres from the house, in the Paço de Sousa monastery.

The beautiful city of Penafiel is a few minutes away, and its 242 years of history give it a degree of antiquity and charm, in contrast to a young and dynamic city, full of commercial spaces that keep the historical centre alive.

Its lush surroundings make this the perfect getaway to relax and contemplate the quietness. But there are many activities available. We recommend one of the many trails along the Romanesque Route or the most genuine and traditional experiences such as an introduction to the art of embroidery or tasting typical local products accompanied by the regional vinho verde. For children, every whim is contemplated in a corner that is dedicated to them, providing their parents with some quiet time.

Solar Egas Moniz is the result of the dream of a family from the North of Portugal, the Vinha family. The house, a 19th century manor house near their hometown, was the opportunity to open the doors of an area full of history and tradition and where this friendly family welcomes strangers like family members.

  • The homemade cornbread, onion with red wine or prosciutto in O Moleiro restaurant in Paço de Sousa. You can also visit the mill that is still used for grinding the bread that is served to you
  • Picnic at Castro de Monte Mozinho, the largest Roman fortified settlement on the Iberian Peninsula. Immerse yourself in the ancient history of Portugal as you taste the delicacies of the region
  • If you go with your family, be sure to stop by the Casa do Gaiato Institution which has a farm where you can feed the cows yourself and perhaps donate some toys that your child no longer uses to the children at this institution

Airport-The nearest airport is in Porto and is only 30 minutes away from Solar Egas Moniz. Transfer services can be organised. Train-From São Bento Station in Porto or from Campanhã, take the Urban Train Caíde/Marco Canavezes line. It takes 40 minutes to reach your destination, Cête station.

Reservations: To confirm the reservation Solar Egas Moniz Charming House asks a deposit 20% of the full reservation via bank transfer (non-refundable). 80% missing should be paid 30 days before arrival. Security deposit hand-delivered on the arrival day in cash: 500€. Refund of security deposit hand-delivered on the departure day if the house is like when the client arrived.

Cancellation: In case of cancellation the following charges will apply: Up to 60 days before the arrival date, free cancellation (except the deposit that is non-refundable). 30 days before the arrival date, the full amount of the booking should be paid. In case of a no show: the full amount of the booking
